Make English Lessons FUN With Songs – Tips for Teaching Young Learners

How do you make learning English fun and exciting for your students in one easy step? Add more music to your lessons! Children naturally love to sing songs and play games. This workshop will give you practical tips and hands on demonstrations for fun and effective activities to do with young learners to improve their English skills. Join Sara Wall from Super Simple Learning on a step by step walk through a lesson plan from “Hello, Hello” to “See You Later.” Let’s sing and play and learn together!

Bio:
Sara Wall is the Social Outreach Coordinator for Super Simple Learning and the Head Teacher of Knock Knock English, in Tokyo. She received her BA in Sociology in the United States, where she worked for non-profit organizations. Since leaving the US, Sara has traveled extensively around Asia, teaching along the way.

Toshie Agawa
Cooperative/collaborative learning within the framework of self-determination theory: Theories and their applications in Japanese EFL classrooms

The purposes of this presentation are to 1) show how cooperative/ collaborative learning (CL) fit into the framework of self-determination theory (SDT), 2) display how CL can be implemented in a Japanese EFL classroom, and 3) demonstrate how CL activities can be conducted in an EFL class. At the beginning of the presentation, the speaker will briefly define what CL is. Then she will explain, by showing the theoretical affinity of SDT and CL, how one can speculate that CL may enhance learner motivation. After that, she will demonstrate how CL can be weaved into a syllabus for an EFL course in a Japanese university. An actual syllabus and its activities will be introduced. Participants will have an opportunity to experience some of these activities. 25 words)

Bio:
Toshie Agawa is an assistant professor at Keisen University in Tokyo. She is interested in learner motivation, demotivation and cooperative/collaborative learning. Her other interests include learner autonomy and communication strategies.
